Elon Musk is projected to become the world’s first trillionaire, an economic feat possible in only one nation on earth: the United States of America. For the last month and a half, I have been in South Africa on mission for community development. South Africa also happens to be the birth nation of Elon Musk, and it remains one of the global epicenters of economic inequality in the post-apartheid era. The image of Musk achieving such extraordinary individual wealth after migrating to America and ascending through extreme forms of capitalism stands in stark contrast to the structural poverty and inequality that persist in his country of origin. This juxtaposition forces a deeper question. What does it say about the American Dream when its highest achievement is the accumulation of unimaginable wealth by one individual while entire communities and nations remain trapped in systemic deprivation?
